Displacements refer to a change in position, the movement of an entity that changes its relative position in space.

The emotional experience that denotes the action of displacing oneself through a building or on the previous path before you reach it became one of the most relevant principles in modern architecture, reaching the point where it transformed these trajectories in rites that were then used to highlight the space and time surrounding the work.

Nowadays, ideas of change of position, transfer or dislocation gain value; displacing transcends the notion of movement and turns into a much wider term that ranges over many geographical concepts and their alterations, the foreigner condition in those that migrate from one place to another detaches itself, and from their experience, it makes a sum that emerges from its differences, by finding in the one that is being displaced not only the idea of he who is far from his place of origin, but also of he who sees himself forced to put himself in exile as a way of escape and survival when faced to the dramas of society.

Architecture is immersed in a world of constant crossings, a place where the active exchange of information and experiences generate new scenarios leaded by displacements, which transgress the own limits of the trade and localization, and at the same time transfer the actions into new spaces in spheres where own and foreign cultures converge, and are characterized by the overlapping of realities and actions that result in projects and opened, changing and multiple works.

The 13th Arquine International Architecture and Design Conference is looking to rescue the value of displacements as the dynamic that supports the action of architecture, of the city and its architects, investigating amongst new scenarios that reinforce the position, relationship and information changes of discipline and of current society.

Critical Territories presents the work of two practices, Groundlab and Plasma Studio, which share a transdisciplinary approach and operate at multiple scales, from product and building design to landscape and masterplanning. The installation has been conceived to immerse visitors in the systemic approach of the practices and their preoccupation with grids, ground and context. A plethora of conceptual and presentation models floating loosely within this grid communicate recurring aims, ideas and spatial and phenomenological effects. Among the projects on show will be the Xian International Horticultural Expo and the Longgang Masterplan.

Groundlab is an emerging international practice in Landscape Urbanism led by five partners: Eva Castro, Holger Kehne, Alfredo Ramirez and Eduardo Rico. Plasma Studio is a leading architecture and design practice founded in 1999 by Eva Castro and Holger Kehne.

DOM Publishers, Berlin, has just released the book “Infrastructural Urbanism. Addressing the In – Between”. This includes the article “The role of Infrastructural landscape in the image of the city” by AALU Studio Master Eduardo Rico. This paper describes how urban infrastructures bear the potential to redefine the role of public open space due to their networked condition and the qualities of their interstitial landscape. It then moves to describe how the research of AALU taps into this potential, by expanding the functional dimension of infrastructure encompassing other social and architectural aspects across multiple scales. The book also features "From Object Line to Vector Field - The social Instrucment" by AALU graduate Rahul Paul examining the role of LU disciplinary approach to design in turning infrastructural works in to agents of critical social change.

LANDSCAPE AND CRITICAL AGENCY SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCES ‘CALL FOR PAPERS’ TO EXPLORE CONTEMPORARY THINKING ABOUT LANDSCAPE

Landscape and Critical Agency will be a 1-day interdisciplinary symposium to explore contemporary thinking about landscape. The symposium has been jointly conceived and organised by staff from four London-based universities and will be held at University College London on Friday, 17^th February 2012. Seeking to explore the relevance of contemporary thinking about landscape to such issues, this symposium asks the question:

“What agency does landscape possess, as a means of territorial organisation and creative production, to engage critically with the conditions that define the collective aspects of our environment?”

As far back as the 10^th century the term ‘landscape’ referred to the ‘collective aspects of the environment’, as J.B. Jackson argues in Discovering the Vernacular Landscape (1984). But rather than the scenographic art it later became, landscape design was initially concerned with the production and organisation of agriculture, housing and infrastructure within its surrounding terrain. Today, whilst the ‘collective’ man-made terrain of the 21^st century also encompasses the globalised movements of finance, media and digital technology, our most urgent questions still concern how physical landscapes are produced and organised.

In this context, a ‘call for papers’ has been announced for the symposium. It aims to encourage submissions that explore the possibility of landscape becoming a new form of critical agency - a radical departure from current understandings and engagement with landscape. Selected abstracts will be developed as full papers and published following the Landscape and Critical Agency symposium. AA LANDSCAPE URBANISM PAVILION OPENS IN XIAN

AA Landscape Urbanism MA opens its pavilion as part of the Horticultural Fair that is taking place in Xian from April to October this year. The pavilion was a invitation to develop a small piece of landscape able to reflect the principles and concepts developed in the MA. The pavilion uses the water and the ground as the main drivers for the design. The ground is manipulated (folded, thickened, ) to allow the inland and lake water to to run through the pavilion by means of water inlets, pools, canals expanding the water experience into the hard and soft landscape: next to benches, paths and plating areas in a seamless design.

This year AA LANDSCAPE URBANISM In the field workshop focused in the city of Rijeka, Croatia. This is the fourth of a series of workshops held each year during the eastern break in conjunction with different LU collaborators. It was a 5 days workshop to produce a proposal within a post-industrial/post-comunist context. Other participants of the workshop include the University of Waterloo, University of Pescara, University of Ljubjana, Universityof Zagreb. The workshop was presented in a final public presentation to the goverment authorities (major and head of the planning department among others) of Rijeka on the 2nd April 2011.

Water has historically been a major concern for the viability of Mexico City; posing a huge challenge at a metropolitan scale, with infrastructural, social and urban implications. The scarcity of water, the increasing cost of the resource and its short-sighted management, together with infrastructural changes currently taking place – major drainage and wastewater treatment works plus plans to control and prevent flooding and landslides – all present opportunities in the recovery and management of water. With the idea of integrating water back into the landscape of Mexico City and trigger the regeneration and reconfiguration of the urban realm, The AA is organising a Visiting School in Mexico City called "Recovering Waterscapes" in which all issues associated with water will be addressed, infrastructually, historically, politically and architecturally.

AA Symposio in Mexico City: From Academia to Praxis, 11 October

The director of the Mexico City Visiting School Alfredo Ramirez has organised a symposium at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City on Monday 11 October 2010.

This one-day event of lectures/presentations given by staff and alumni of the Architectural Association was a preface to the AA Visiting School in Mexico City in January 2011. The event was an opportunity to present the work and research methodologies being developed at the Architectural Association with AA graduates.

AA lecturers and guests invited to the symposium shared and commented on their own research ambitions and the use of these methodologies in practice and education. At the same time Brett Steele discussed the role of schools of architecture and his vision for the future with a distinguished group of Mexican practitioners and educators. The symposium aimed to contribute to the exchange of pedagogic ideas and it will confront the leading issues shaping architecture, design and urban culture at the outset of the 21st century.

Abstract

Both landscape and infrastructure are territorial practices. Each functions as a kind of ‘groundwork‘, shaping, organising and servicing bases upon which forms of social, economic and ecological relations operate. What, though, is their relationship? Landscape design and landscape urbanism have tended, in recent years, to follow an agenda set by infrastructural development, in both its technical and economic senses, or even to identify themselves with, and as, infrastructural practices. Since this development is itself largely driven by processes of neoliberal urban entrepreneurialism, however, greater critical reflection on the position of design, its own agency and its practice in relation to infrastructural matters are required. Exploring the possibility of landscape urbanism as a critically-informed practice, and the design processes by which it might operate, this lecture will draw upon examples of recent work in China by graduates of the Landscape Urbanism programme of the Architectural Association, London.

Nature and its more recent derivatives, like ‘environment’ or ‘sustainability’, are ‘empty’ signifiers. There is no such thing as a singular Nature around which an environmental policy or an environmentally sensitive planning/architecture can be constructed and performed. Rather, there are a multitude of natures and a multitude of existing, possible or practical socio-natural relations. The obsession with a singular Nature that requires ‘sustaining’ or, at least, ‘managing’, is sustained by a particular ‘quilting’ of Nature that forecloses asking political questions about immediately and really possible alternative socio-natural arrangements. I conclude with a call for a politicization of the environment, one that is predicated upon the recognition of the indeterminacy of nature, the constitutive split of the people, the unconditional democratic demand of political equality, and the real possibility for the inauguration of different possible public socio-ecological futures that express the democratic presumptions of freedom and equality.

The Urban Surface - public, glorious, urgent"Programming the Urban Surface" is the title of an article Alex Wall contributed to Recovering Landscape, edited by James Corner and published in 1999. In the early days of landscape urbanism, the article looked at the emergence of projects, nascent theories and the potential significance of an "extensive" design of the urban landscape. Since its publication, the twin forces of urbanization and climate change bring a far more urgent focus on the performance of public space and the public realm. The lecture will consider the design of the urban surface with respect to the city as a context "as found," to questions of density, social equity, and as Philippe Rahm has put it, "public space becomes the place where the quality of air is defined.

Themes and questions
Bozen produced recently an original and innovative Masterplan that points to redefine different urban scenarios of quality for the future of the city. Among the themes and the areas to develop there are some which require to be seen with the multiple eye of an urbanist, a landscape architect, an architect and an infrastructural engineer. One of those zones - the area between Bozen Sued and Virgel , is subject of interest of a group of teachers and students of the Building Design Course a the University of Trento which has produced some original visions of the future. Starting from this research is born the idea to invite the prestigious Master of Landscape Urbanism of the Architectural Association of London (one of the most prestigious scholl of Architecture within Europe) with its international teachers and students which will work for 10 days together with the team of Trento to propose project solutions for this complex but strategic area of Bozen. The themes will go from in suggesting a deviation of the A22 which is a real barrier within the texture of the city to the redefinition of the existing public, residential and commercial spaces to the definition of scenarios of sustainable and alternative mobility and the scenic valorisation of the Hill of the Virgel.

Operative modalities
The workshop from the 12h till the 22nd of April will include representatives of the public administration as well as public and private departments which will be the complementary actors of the project. Conferences and lectures of architects and teachers will be hold as supporting programme and a magazine with a collection of the research material will be distributed after the workshop in the city of Bozen. Furthermore an international production with the collection of the experiences of the Master of “Landscape Urbanism” ( America, Africa, Arabia, Europe, ecc.) will include also the project proposals for Bozen which will be devellopped during this workshop.

In Chile the construction of a new sports infrastructure to house the 'South-American Games ODESUR 2014'is being treated as an unparalleled opportunity to transform a range of environments. By taking a critical look at the ambitious plans currently under development, and proposing design alternatives, the workshop aims at defining strategies applicable at different scales. Participants will approach this project by integrating different fields of architectural action. Based on a process of landscape indexing and mapping, Jorge’s project seeks to tackle the real estate sameness, always related to the development of the so called family-resorts that have proliferated along the Mexican Pacific Coast.
The project proposes a network of Landscapes, tropical trees and plantations preventing excessive erosion and polluted water infiltration. Diverse plants and species were assigned to respond to different watershed conditions, creating the infrastructure for agriculture, leisure and controlled tourism development.
The hexagonal prototypes seek to produce an assemblage between two elements of the project:
the water edges and the nature, as a speculation on how 2 natural processes may be able to generate new forms of mutual enhancement. Physical model helped control the territory and to measure the circulation between each of these prototypes.

Alfredo Ramirez (Groundlab), Clara Oloriz and Felipe Garcia have won an ideas competition for the regeneration of the Av. Barcelona in Miami Platja, Catalonia. The project encompasses an area of over 90,000 m2 of linear public network along the length of the avenue.

The proposal Cales Urbanes recovers the concept of ramble to reconnect the coastline with the city through a braided network of greenery, open space, pathways, cycle paths, transport system and public programme, integrating an infrastructural landscape that harvests and recycles water while working as a storm water drainage system, creating, maintaining and managing the project.

Plasmastudio has recently won the competition to develop the building and landscape design for Horticultural Expo in Xi'an, China. The project comprises 15,000 exhibition hall building, a series of conservatories, a 37Ha park around an artificial lake as well as ancilliary buildings. The next stages of development will take place during the next months with the collaboration of Plasmastudio (buildings) and Groundlab (landscape urbanism).

Given the multidisciplinary nature of Landscape Urbanism, this series correspondingly ranges across urbanism, landscape architecture, planning, geography, philosophy, cybernetics and social theory. It aims to explore the role of these disciplines in relation to the development, theorisation and practice of Landscape Urbanism. Specifically, this course will introduce and elaborate the paradigm under which Landscape Urbanism understands and employs the ‘Landscape’ component of its title. As opposed to presenting the discipline as a simple conjunction of its two terms therefore, the aim, particularly within the first term, is to elaborate the ways in which Landscape offers a processual, scalar and temporal medium through which the particular conditions of contemporary urbanism might be processed.

Structurally the course aims toward a synergy with the programme of the design studio, since, in its first term, it addresses the models and methods employed by Landscape Urbanism alongside an historically and socially contextualised account of the conditions through which these have developed. In the second term contemporary urban conditions are addressed as the focus of the programme whilst the conditions and possibilities these pose for the practice of Landscape Urbanism are critically explored. Whilst the programme of term one is principally concerned with an introduction to the discipline and its methods, then, the second term has a more contemporary and geographically specific orientation intended to respond to the specific sites addressed within the design core and the development of each student’s own critical agenda.

Students will be expected to work in groups for the seminar portion of the course.In the first term, the sessions will be largely given to lecture with minor input from student groups. In the second term, a greater role will be handed over to student group presentations.

Douglas Spencer gained a BA Hons in History of Art Design and Film Studies from Sheffield City Polytechnic, a Master’s Degree in Cultural Studies from Sheffield City Polytechnic, and is currently undertaking a PhD in Architectural Theory at Westminster University. He has published research in a number of journals and books on the subjects of Urbanism, Landscape Urbanism, Utopian Design and critical theory

Deep Ground project designed by Groundlab Collective has moved forward to the next design stage. The main principles regarding architectural detail and strategic definition of the spatial qualities of the masterplan have been outlined so that they can be implemented in detail design stages.
The project features Landscape Urbanism design methodology principles and is characterised by a bottom up approach dealing with local characteristics of urban villages in the existing fabric of Longgang, both in morphological and programmatic terms, as well as usage of landscape as a structuring force of the whole development. Angeliki Koliomichou (AA LU 2006/07) will present her project MA project 'Augmented Waterways' at the international conference on Water and Urban Development Paradigms in Leuven, Belgium.

This international conference intends to bridge the gap between the disciplines of water management, ecology and the approaches of engineering, urban design and spatial planning. Sessions will develop a series of themes, discussing the historical relationship between water systems and human settlements, and related management problems regarding urban floods, water use and water sanitation. In each session, presentations are invited on problem definition, technical and design-based solutions, but also on boundary conditions of exogenous, political or economical nature. It is hoped that this interdisciplinary information exchange and communication will lead to discussion and will contribute to a better integration of approaches currently considered in the separate disciplines of water management, water engineering, spatial urban planning and design and aquatic ecology. Also aspects of meteorological, demographic, political, economical, and educational and life-style related nature will be considered in the analysis of solutions to current and emerging urban water problems. This on the longer term might lead to new paradigms in managing water in the urban environment.
