The first of four talks in the Landscape Urbanism Lecture Series, organised by the AA Graduate School Landscape Urbanism Programme. Open to all.
Landscape Architecture interacts in a complex continuum between man and nature, town and country, land and architecture. We no longer reconcile the duality of opposite forces but orchestrate and choreograph a multitude of dynamic and hybrid interactions. How to turn towards a new landscape architecture of sustainable optimism; a potent mix of artificial intelligence and natural instinct?
Eelco Hooftman is a founding partner with Bridget Baines of GROSS. MAX. Landscape Architects. He integrates theory and practice of landscape architecture in an extensive output of projects that combines a Dutch sense of experimentation with a British sense of humor and a German sense of rigour. Hooftman has regularly visited as a critic at the AA School and is the first landscape architect to be selected as member of the Royal Society of the Arts in Scotland. In 2010, Building Designrecognised GROSS. MAX. as Public Realm Architect of the Year. The studio’s collaborators include Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, Amanda Levete Architects, Piet Oudolf and artist Mark Dion. Current projects include Tempelhof Freiheit, the transformation of the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin and a linear park for the Central Business District in Beijing.

AA LANDSCAPE URBANISM IN BILBAO APRIL 2012


The AA Landscape Urbanism went to Bilbao as part of the annual LU in the field workshop. This year AALU students 2011-12 worked on the creation of a overall strategy for Bilbao in relation to the potentials and challenges the city faces. The students presented their work to the local authorities and had the support of the Bilbao municipality through the Urban and Services departments. The workshop took place at "La Alhondiga" a multipurpose cultural facility located in the center of the city. The work was published in the Bilbao LAN TV and the local newspaper El correo.

ALFREDO RAMIREZ LECTURES IN KW INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, BERLIN

Alfredo Ramirez will be giving a talk within the "Free Space Design in the Contemporary City" Colloquium at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin 30th March 2012. The lecture will deal with the way in which Groundlab and Landscape Urbanism engage with the concept of the ground, both as a spatial strategy but also as a generator of a wider perspective to think about cities, territories and ecologies.

LANDSCAPE URBANISM IN RARA MAGAZINE

December issue of the RaRa Magazine (issue 5) includes an article on Landscape Urbanism as design discipline, outlining both one of its main academic roots in the Architectural Association AALU as well as describing the work of some of its practitioners (GroundLab, Plasmastudio, [Ay] studio). "MULTIPLYING THE GROUND" ESSAY BY EVA CASTRO AND ALFREDO RAMIREZ PUBLISHED

The essay called "Multiplying the ground" by Eva Castro and Alfredo Ramirez (AA Landscape Urbanism MA Director and Studio Master) has been recently published within " Design Innovation for the built environment" book edited by Michael Hensel.

AA MEXICO CITY VISITING SCHOOL Applications Open

‘Prototypical Networks’ is a Visiting School by the Architectural Association School of Architecture which will run from the 25th June - 06 July 2012 at Centro Cultural de España in Mexico City.
The Visiting School is an opportunity to experience the methodology and ideas developed at the Architectural Association in a short and intense full time studio for two weeks.

It includes a symposium and an exhibition that will bring together architects and urbanists from Mexico and the international scene.

Applications to participate in this event are now open. The programme is open to all current architecture and design students, phd candidates and young professionals from Mexico and abroad. Space is limited.
